Moving With Pets and Kids

How to Make Your Move with Pets and Kids a Success

Moving is complicated, even if the only person you’re moving is yourself. Adding children and pets into the moving day mix presents a unique challenge. Working through big changes, like moving with your kids or pets, can be difficult, especially if you are not adequately prepared. With summer now upon us – the favored time for families to move between school years, we have compiled a list of tips and tricks for making your move with kids and pets a little bit smoother.

Moving With Pets and Kids

Tip #1 Talk with Your Kids Before You Move

Having open and honest discussions that are age-appropriate with your children leading up to your move will make a huge difference. Honesty is the best policy. When the final decision has been made to move, you should sit down with your kids, let them vent their emotions without fear of repercussions and help them understand all the new benefits of a move. Perhaps emphasize the new neighborhood, the bug yard space, or the proximity to family.

Tip #2 Prepare Your Pets for Travel

Your pets might not be used to long car rides or even flights. One thing you can do to ease the stress on your four-legged friends is to practice taking short trips with them. Get them used to their carrier if they will have to be in one during the move, speak to their vet about possible anxiety treatments during moving day, and make sure to pack things to entertain them, like a new toy.

Tip #3 Get All Your Documents – School, Medical, and Veterinary

The last thing you want to worry about if you’re moving across the country or to a different part of the state is trying to find all of your vital records. Plan before your move to get school records, medical files, and vet records. Digitize these records and label them so that they are easy to find. A tip we love is utilizing your GoogleDrive and creating a “vital records” folder. You can access these records on your phone, tablet, or computer and easily send links to Doctors, schools, and other professionals.

Tip #4 Packing for Easy Access

This can easily be the most important thing you do when packing for a move with kids and pets. Pack all your everyday necessities on the tops of boxes that are clearly labeled, or keep them in a separate bag that you can easily access. Items you should pack for easy access include medications, favorite toys, treats, and bedtime items like blankets and dog beds.
